Business success requires seamless information and event flow across departments, customers, partners, and systems. Heterogeneous message formats, protocols, identity tokens, and high message volumes often challenge integration teams. As teams scale Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles of sharing, re-use, and loose coupling across integration participants and interconnect integration endpoints, an enterprise integration blueprint should include a robust and high-performance Enterprise Integration Platform. The Enterprise Service Bus is a core of this platform, enabling interconnection, mediation, management and transformation. Additionally, Registry, Message Broker and Data Services components provide a solid foundation for a best-practice based and scalable integration approach.

In the WSO2 Enterprise Integration Platform tutorial, Kasun and Paul will describe a best-practice integration approach using WSO2 components, advanced patterns, and new technologies. They will explain how to link applications, services, and APIs using:

  • Cloud connectors and a cloud connector architecture
  • Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIP)
  • High Performance with Pass-Thru transport
  • REST mediation and transformation
  • JSON handling
  • Asynchronous processing and Event Driven Architecture with Message Broker
  • Service monitoring
  • Legacy systems adapters into SAP/R3, PeopleSoft and others

Many development teams today develop & publish services, yet struggle to create a service architecture that is widely shared, reused and adopted across internal and external development teams. Instead of creating consistent service architecture and demonstrating service re-use, teams inadvertently produce Just a Bunch of Web Services or Just a Bunch of REST Services.

In this tutorial session, Sumedha and Sanjeewa will describe how to include API management as a strategic component within your Service Oriented Architecture initiative. The session will pragmatically demonstrate how to use WSO2 API Manager to convert your existing services into promoted, documented, and secured managed API, which gain consumer adoption. You will learn the following API management basics:

  • API creation, publishing & lifecycle management
  • Subscription management
  • Managing API access, authorization & throttling
  • Monitoring API usage via statistics
  • Deploying for scalability

Including the appropriate application component into your enterprise application can decrease development time and maintenance cost. For example, building a business workflow using a BPEL script, dashboard using a Gadget, or integration adapter with an ESB mediation flow. Development tools crossing all enterprise application components are rare, and often expensive. Developer are commonly forced to work with several different tools, and often will use the ‘tool they know’ rather than the ‘best tool for the job’.

The WSO2 Developer Studio is a complete Eclipse-based open source IDE that relieves developers of the day-to-day hassles associated with application development. Developers using WSO2 Developer Studio can build composite enterprise applications using a single, comprehensive tool that supports all application components. Studio helps you develop, deploy, test and debug both on-premise and Cloud applications.

In this tutorial, Harshana will demonstrate how developers can use WSO2 Developer Studio in real-world enterprise application development scenarios. Tutorial participants will learn how the WSO2 Developer Studio can be used to deploy the application to the WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware platform, and how to manage their enterprise application components with source control systems and build tools.

Over the last decade, access to high-performance, cost-effective SoCs has often been restricted to those customers able to plausibly guarantee seven- or eight-digit shipment volumes. This scale advantage has favored incumbents over new entrants, and has suppressed innovation in the consumer electronics and mobile sectors. Devices such as Raspberry Pi, which package high-performance SoCs in an affordable, easy to integrate form factor, make it much easier for even small organizations to compete in these sectors.

API management is a strategic component within your Service Oriented Architecture initiative. Many development teams publish services, yet struggle to create a service architecture that is widely shared, re-used, and adopted across internal development teams. SOA governance programs often fall far short of encouraging consumer adoption, tracking service consumption, and illustrating business value. Too often, there is little or no insight into:

  • How to enable business functionality as an API.
  • Who is writing re-usable APIs and services.
  • Who is consuming APIs and services.
  • How APIs and services are being used.

In this session Chris will describe benefits gained by:

  • Publishing managed APIs for consumption within your organization.
  • Establishing API manager and publisher roles to foster API adoption.
  • Extending the service governance registry to encourage cross-team (or cross-department) communication, coordination and collaboration.
  • Overcoming common SOA anti-patterns of ‘Not Invented Here’ (NIH) and ‘Build, and Build Again’ by using an API Store.
  • Following an API roadmap focused on increasing service re-use and enhancing IT business value.

Performance is a key constraint limiting business transaction processing volume, transaction responsiveness, and an application solution’s ability to fulfill SLAs (Service Level Agreements). Both consumer and partner facing applications often must process large transaction volumes with high throughput and low latency. Architecture and deployment topology significantly impacts whether an application or service solution will meet business transaction processing goals.

During this session Asanka Abeysinghe, Director of Solutions Architecture at WSO2 will describe WSO2 Middleware product performance, a capacity planning matrix, capacity planning processes, and how to build a deployment architecture. Asanka will discuss:

  • Why the WSO2 platform architecture creates a high performance and scalable middleware platform
  • What design principles and product composition sets (including WSO2 ESB, WSO2 Message Broker, WSO2 BAM and WSO2 CEP) will deliver highly scalable and available solutions
  • How to build your deployment architecture by identifying the correct deployment patterns and reference architecture
  • How to gauge solution performance and scale by performing capacity planning to identify the number of server instances required for your enterprise deployment, required hardware/virtualization infrastructure, and infrastructure provisioning requirements by using tested facts instead of traditional sizing assumptions.

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) technologies can serve as transformation agents leading to a more effective, more efficient and significantly less expensive national defense establishment. The 21st century has seen some of the most dramatic changes in global military organizations since the advent of mechanization in the early 20th century. Successful organizations have evolved from Industrial Age to Information Age models that emphasize robust networking, shared situational knowledge, interoperability and operational agility. Information Age warfighting differs from its Industrial Age predecessor as well. Though highly lethal, it is generally limited in scope and seeks to effect behavioral modifications within an enemy government rather than the complete destruction of enemy forces. It is usually conducted within a joint or coalition environment, and centers on the data intensive use of precision guided munitions (PGM).

The needs of both the warfighting and acquisition communities have evolved as well. Commanders and combatants alike demand dramatic reductions in decision cycle time fueled by improved situational awareness, coordinated solution development and improvements to operational agility gained through transparent resource security and across-the-board interoperability. Procurement officials demand the minimization of sustainment costs, the elimination of redundancies and, as a sign of the times, ecologically friendly combat systems.

This presentation provides a case study of a program that leveraged the power and cost effective nature of WSO2’s open source SOA platform to achieve a dramatic reduction in sustainment and development costs, elimination of hardware and software redundancies, significant improvements in interoperability and information chain management, and, most importantly, the achievement of a dramatically shortened targeting to engagement cycle.

Cognizant Cloud Connector is built using best-of-breed open source technology and open standards. The cloud-based, service-oriented integration platform helps organizations connect their on-premise applications, cloud-based applications, and popular software-as-aservice applications. Users may author subscription and flow configurations, expose flows as services, and specify service level agreements.

Configuration is stored in a central platform repository. The platform secures, governs, and manages service interactions using standards-compliant policies. The platform supports fast wire formats besides SOAP and XML (REST). Tenants can peer into Cloud interactions by monitoring service usage and service invocation metrics.

Additionally, the platform offers Adapter Services for popular service providers and Entity Services compliant with common industry standard entity data models. Among other open source standards, and technology components the Cognizant Cloud Connector extends three WSO2 products; WSO2 Business Activity Monitor, WSO2 Governance Registry, and some modules of the WSO2 Identity Server. WSO2 Business Activity Monitor delivers customized monitoring dashboards and reports, WSO2 Governance registry stores integration flows, service subscriptions, and has been customized to deliver advanced artifact search capabilities. During his session, Dipanjan will present real-life use cases, demonstrate high performance, cloud-based integration capabilities, and illustrate how WSO2 open source products can be extended to deliver an innovative and high-performance cloud integration platform.

New IT is a model for building an agile IT infrastructure . It is a vision of pulling together lightweight integration, APIs, Platform-as-a-Service and App Factory. This creates a responsive IT infrastructure that enables innovation in a structured enterprise grade approach.

This is an amazing vision, but in many organisations, it isn't clear how to get to this vision from where we are today. This keynote from Paul Fremantle, CTO and Co-Founder, addresses exactly this question: how can we get from an existing IT infrastructure into a responsive, agile, cloud-native approach. Using an agile mindset, this session will break this down into achievable milestones that allow an organisation to plan out a model for:

  • Using API management both internally and externally to supercharge integration
  • Adding cloud-based DevOps processes to enable innovation
  • How to integrate PaaS into your environment incrementally
